Use of the Farsite Fire Growth Model for Fire Prediction in U.s. National Parks

ASTRACT: The F ARSITE (Fire Area Simulator) is a fue growth model that spatially projects fue perimeters and behavior over complex landscapes. The model uses spatial data themes from a geographic information system (GIS) along with weather and wind data to propagate fue as a spreading wave front. The model runs on a personal computer under the WINDOWS operating environment. Version 1.0 of the FARSITEmodel was distributed by the US National Park Service and US Forest Service beginning January 1995. Its intended use is for management support of active fues and planning for potential fues .
